Rockport windstorm insurance after Hurricane Harvey
Few Texas communities understand hurricane risk like Rockport. In August 2017, Hurricane Harvey made landfall near Rockport as a Category 4 storm, damaging or destroying thousands of homes and businesses across Aransas County. Many homes in Rockport, Fulton, and the surrounding area were rebuilt or re-roofed afterward, and having the right windstorm coverage in place remains one of the most important financial decisions a homeowner here can make.
Rebuilt and re-roofed homes need the right paperwork
If your home was repaired, rebuilt, or re-roofed after Harvey or a later storm, it should have a windstorm certificate of compliance showing the work met the Texas building code. Insurers and the Texas Windstorm Insurance Association (TWIA) rely on these certificates. You can search for your WPI-8 or WPI-8-E through the Texas Department of Insurance windstorm program, and we can help you figure out what you need if a certificate is missing.
TWIA and private options in Aransas County
Aransas County is one of the 14 first-tier coastal counties in TWIA's service area, and TWIA is often the primary wind and hail option for homes close to the water. To qualify, you need a declination from at least one private insurer and a property in good repair that meets TWIA's certification rules. We still check private carriers for every Rockport home, because some offer competitive wind coverage for newer or well-built properties.
Waterfront, canal, and vacation homes
From the canal homes on Key Allegro to properties along Fulton Beach Road, Copano Bay, and the Lamar Peninsula, many Rockport-area homes are second homes or short-term rentals. How you use the property affects which policies are available and what they cover. Let us know if you rent the home out, how often it is occupied, and whether you have storm shutters or impact-rated windows so we can quote the right coverage.
Storm surge requires flood insurance
Windstorm insurance does not pay for storm surge or rising water, which is a serious risk for bayfront and canal properties. TWIA requires proof of flood insurance for certain properties in V zones that were built, altered, or enlarged on or after September 1, 2009. Even if your home is not in a V zone, a separate flood policy is strongly recommended, and National Flood Insurance Program policies usually have a 30-day waiting period.

Rockport Windstorm Insurance FAQs
No law requires it, but if you have a mortgage, your lender will require wind and hail coverage. Rockport is in Aransas County, and many homeowners policies in the Texas coastal counties exclude wind and hail, so most Rockport homeowners need either a separate windstorm policy or a homeowners policy that includes wind. Hurricane Harvey's 2017 landfall near Rockport showed how important wind coverage is here. Without it, a hurricane or hailstorm could leave you paying for roof and structural damage yourself.
There is no single price. Your premium depends on your home's exact location, age and construction, roof type and age, coverage amount, and deductible. Waterfront and canal homes, like those on Key Allegro and along Fulton Beach Road, generally have more wind exposure than homes farther from the bay. The fastest way to know your cost is a quote. A WPI-8 is a windstorm certificate of compliance from the Texas Department of Insurance, not a city permit, and it matters most for insurance. Aransas County is in TWIA's coastal area, so a home built, added on to, or repaired (including re-roofed) since January 1, 1988 generally needs a WPI-8, WPI-8-E, or WPI-8-C to qualify for TWIA coverage. Many Rockport homes were repaired or re-roofed after Harvey, so make sure those repairs have a certificate. Buyers, lenders, and some private insurers ask for it too. Search for existing certificates with the TDI windstorm certificate lookup.
Yes. Second homes and rentals are common in Rockport and Fulton, but they are insured differently than a primary residence. A rental may need a dwelling or landlord policy, and short-term rentals can have additional requirements. Tell us how the home is used and how often it is occupied so we can quote the right wind and hail coverage.
